Curating Libraries At Zulal Wellness Resort By Chiva-Som
25 Jan 2023
A retreat is the perfect way to kickstart a year of self-care and rejuvenation. A pioneering new destination is Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som, opened in March 2022 by the wellness tourism giant, whose resort in Thailand was voted ‘Best Destination Spa in the World 2022’ by Condé Nast Traveller. Situated at the edge of the sea and a desert in Qatar, the resort blends Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine with a well-being philosophy centred around six pillars – fitness, physiotherapy, spa, holistic health, aesthetic beauty and nutrition.~~Ultimate Library worked closely with the Chiva-Som team to curate bespoke collections for two distinct yet interconnected experiences, Zulal Discovery for families and Zulal Serenity for adults. Over 1200 books were carefully selected to give guests from around the world an insight into Qatari culture and ancient medicinal practices and connect new generations to the resort’s philosophy, environment and range of activities on offer.
The world’s first family-focussed wellness resort offers tailored programmes based on the idea that individual well-being is intricately linked to fulfilling family life and the ability to build meaningful relationships. The retreat gives family members the opportunity to participate in age-appropriate activities – nature-based outings, arts and crafts and baking for young children and kayaking, dancing and personal training for older children – as well as wide-ranging treatments, with communal facilities designed to foster meaningful family connection.~~~Within Zulal Discovery, the Discovery Library is a sea of calm, giving families space to continue their learning and relaxation. Ultimate Library curated a book collection that brings together ideas of well-being and sanctuary to enhance the resort’s offerings and reflect its unique philosophies. Books are displayed across an impressive 55 metres of shelving among games, sculptures, and artefacts for guests to browse and borrow during their stay. Titles on meditation techniques and smart thinking, such as

Nature Explorer
by Frances Gillespie offers young readers a unique insight into the country’s natural history and wildlife, while
The Book of Hopes
by Katherine Rundell is packed with short stories, poems, and pictures to inspire and entertain.
The Serenity experience is designed for guests over the age of sixteen seeking a path of rest and reflection. Programmes are personalised to individual health needs, from relaxation and detox to weight management and fitness. Every aspect of Serenity is devised to give you a refined, sensory, and luxurious experience far removed from your every day. The facilities, treatments and dining options on offer contribute to a sense of peace and contemplation, allowing guests to embrace lasting lifestyle changes.~~House of Wisdom within Zulal Serenity is a quiet haven for enrichment and self-reflection. This soothing space, created by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt takes its name from Iraq’s famed ancient centre of learning and intellect, and features a Tearoom, Apothecary and Library centred around a Qatari stone cube housing Anish Kapoor’s void. “For me, a library is an essential part of a house, but this can also be the case in a resort.” Vervoort told Sleeper. “It’s the place where knowledge, wisdom and education reign…Our library, a warm, inviting place where guests can sit at the table and read for hours, takes on a new meaning at Zulal because mobile phones are not allowed in the public spaces”.~~The book collection is designed to evoke a sense of place and perspective, with beautiful, illustrated titles on Qatari culture and history, nature and architecture, sitting alongside reading books on apothecary, herbal medicines and ancient self-care. Lessons on botanical teas and infusions can be further explored through, Joseph Uhl’s
